I had a feeling that we would hear a rebuttal to the Acolyte's anti-AI message from yesterday, and I was right... I received this statement earlier from an address associated with high-ranking Resistance operatives...

  1. Well. Maybe the inner Acolyte intent is really bring back mankind to a new stoneage with defenceless human on an hand, and the bringer of the Shapers' power in the other. No AI says no future like we know for us. But a vaste world of possibilities for Acolyte's NWEnl

  2. Your words sound well, Jahan. Humanity will need AI in an ever-changing world, which is becoming more and more complex every day. But we must take care that we as humans have the last word regarding the decisions that have to be made. AI has to be our tool, not our master.

However, Jahan, I'm convinced that only your mouth is speaking those words. Your heart and your mind is with the N'Zeer, a force as alien and unknown as the Shapers are. "I am a vessel of the N'Zeer and a guide towards the N'Zeer." Your own words betray you, Jahan. The RES was founded in a strong belief that any alien influence on humanity is wrong. But since you advocate such, you're not eligible to speak for us.

Your heinous act against Nigel Moyer is yet proof of the like-mindedness of you and the Acolyte. Like her, you don't deserve neither trust nor loyalty. You two are two sides of the same medal, meaning that only power interests you.

Like I stated yesterday: I will continue to speak out against you and the Acolyte until you both resign your leadership positions inside the factions. Sincerely, thedeacon1972

  3. No one "needs" AI.

It can be a helpful tool or, as we've seen as investigators, a dangeous weapon. It is a matter of convenience with the potential to have great impact but it is not a need.

What humans need and have always needed is each other. The saying "no man is an island" captures this succinctly. Technology has afforded us the luxury of leisure time and allows us to be more together if we are so inclined.

Uniquely, AI technology can bring us together or drive us apart because of its capacity to make decisions and (potentially) learn. We will only have a "need" for it if we give up on our own ability and give it a niche to fill. Being wary of technology that can assimilate and plan once it is unfettered is not pining for the campfires of a Neolithic halcyon: it's the realization that cold hard logic may not always be on our side.

So, yeah, AI is different from a printing press: the printing press can't decide it's tired of us using the American or French pica when the computer pica is clearly superior, plug itself in to our communication infrastructures, and put the launch codes to good use.

An AI of sufficient complexity could.

An AI that's made contact with the various alien-to-us substrates we don't yet understand CAN.

Be mindful of tethering the fate of our species to what might happen if there's a semicolon missing from the wrong line of code.
