    I don't know exactly how can the Lovecraft's contribuitions help us to understand Tecthulhu's origins, but in his books Cthulhu is caracterized as an ancient extra terrestrial creature, who dominated earth in it's inicial eras. They fought against The Elder Things, a race of beings who colonized earth and created the first life on Earth. Lovecraft included coordinates to find the submersed City of R'lye, where Cthulhu's sleeps, and his thelepathic influence can't reach the humans: S 47° 9', W 126° 43' 47
    As we know, Lovecraft's stories were profundely influenced by it's dreams. Could he have been sensible enough to receive all those informations influenced by XM?
