When I first met Devra, she told me about this incident -- although to her she experienced it as something that may or may not have happened. Many people in Calvin’s studies had this experience. It’s like a kind of psychic abduction. Most people block it out after it happens. Not because it was traumatic, but because they perceived it as a dream or faulty memory, one created by the mind as a fantasy or an explanation of something else.

Also to JoJo's point: Absent something like XM, the idea of our brains having rationalizing as their primary skill for the illusion of choice is plausible. But retrocausality is possible with a multi-dimensional particle which is 'unstuck in time'.
Perhaps we have choice because we have XM.
